Changed MAUT
Starting from December 1, 2023, the German government has announced significant changes to the German road toll system (MAUT). As part of the toll system, a CO2 emission class will be introduced, meaning the toll rate per kilometer will vary based on the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) a vehicle emits. This change is in accordance with extensive EU regulations.

The updated MAUT will affect transportation to, from, and through Germany. From July 1, 2024, MAUT will apply to vehicles weighing between 3.5 tons and 7.5 tons, previously it only applied to vehicles over 7.5 tons. Other countries such as Austria, the Czech Republic, and Hungary are also reviewing their road tax fees. We will provide more information on the consequences for transportation as soon as possible.

Maritime Industry Covered by EU's ETS from 2024
Starting from January 1, 2024, the European Union is expanding the use of the Emissions Trading System (ETS) to include the maritime industry and ferry operators to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. This measure will result in an additional cost for shipping, impacting freight expenses. Initially, the maritime sector affected includes passenger and cargo ships with a gross tonnage exceeding 5000 tons operating routes within the EU.

More information on how NTEX will handle this additional cost and its effects will be communicated before December 1. Shipping will gradually be integrated into the ETS, with 40% of emissions covered from 2024. This increases to 70% in 2025, and from 2026, 100% of emissions will be subject to fees.

What is ETS?
The European Union Emissions Trading System (ETS) was introduced in 2005 to cost-effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions from energy-intensive industries, power producers, and airlines. Companies are allocated or purchase emission allowances under a predetermined cap, which is gradually reduced. A similar system will also be introduced for road transport. The exact timing of this implementation is not yet determined, but it is likely to occur sometime in 2027/2028.
